Autumn Flowers - Red Ditsy Floral Shirt Dress from New Look Inspire

I feel very lucky that I have wonderful friends, but to have wonderful friends with excellent taste in fashion is just so incredibly fortunate. And that feeling of excitement, luck and happiness was written all over my face when opening one of my birthday presents from the lovely Chattermonkey. Inside I found this darling Red Ditsy Floral Shirt Dress from New Look Inspire staring back at me, and couldn't wait to get myself into it!

The dress fits right in with my vintage sensibilities. A bold red with blue and white floral accents, it's a Summer print which flits into Autumn with ease. The dress is sized up to accommodate my larger bust, but the belted fit and flare shape ensures that my waist doesn't get hidden amongst the fabric.

The dress is currently part of the New Look sale on their website, and you can pick this beauty up for just £9. I teamed it with a lovely Tatty Devine swan necklace which was also a birthday gift (this time from the almost-mother-in-law), and some blue flowers from Pearls & Swine. It's such a cute and comfy outfit to wear, and one which sits easily under a cardigan as layers get thrown on for the colder weather.

Until next time,

Sunshine After The Rain - Autumnal Days in H&M, Primark and Pearls & Swine

I feel a bit like an idiot posting this now that the treacherous weather has turned back to feathery rain and ominous grey skies. But cast your minds back to last week and remember that we had a couple of glorious sun filled days which harked back to Summer - days where you'd feel warm in a coat, with the sun's golden glow throwing long shadows all around you.

I know it's hard to believe now that our ten minutes of proper Autumn has suddenly turned into the start of six months of Winter. I can now barely remember what my legs look like out of black tights and suspect their paleness would blind me if I could and glanced upon them.

But anyway. Going back to that lovely warm, Autumn sunshine...

Dress: H&M
Cardigan: H&M
Tights: Primark
Ballet Flats: Primark

The not-quite-chlorine-blonde in my hair is still freaking me out a little. I sort of like it, but it takes me by shock every time I see it. It was never meant to be like this for more than a day - it was just a pre-lightening exercise as a base for bright hair-dye fun. But I've learned a lesson - wait for your order of hair dye to actually arrive before covering yourself in peroxide. Sigh.

That said, I think the hair works with this outfit. The H&M dress was a £4 bargain in their sale, and the cardigan and ballet flats work brilliantly with the various shades of pink. But that's it. Nothing else but ankle boots, faux fur and wolly socks until March. Good bye legs, see you in the spring!

Until next time,

Wednesday, Break My Heart - White Collar Dress from New Look Inspire

There's no doubt in my mind that Wednesday Adams is one of my all time style icons. The fact that my wardrobe contains so many black dresses with white collars is a testament to just how much of an influence she had on me from a very young age.

Hot Hot Heat - Summer Chub Rub Saviours from Bandelettes

Whilst I love Summer, almost every owner of a pair of thighs has come across the problem of what has affectionately been termed the dreaded "chub rub". We've all experienced it - that sweaty friction which turns a sunshine filled walk into a long, spiky fall into hell fire. There have been many solutions offered over the years - sweating it out in leggings, unattractive "comfort shorts" and all manner of creams and pastes designed to form a barrier for your skin. Whilst effective in their own ways, there's nothing like feeling sticky or squeezed like a sausage to leave you feeling less than a summery goddess. Thankfully this is where US brand Bandelettes have stepped in, giving chunky thighs a bit of breathing space when the weather heats up.

Bandelettes are one of those items which as soon as I slipped on, I couldn't fathom why someone hadn't thought of it sooner. Not only do they look like sexy stocking toppers so instantly put a kick in your step, the thigh bands protect and provide comfort from chafing all day long.

Available in a whole range of colours and designs (I was sent the Red Romance style to review), the wide lace bands are backed with non-slip silicone to ensure they stay in place all day. You simply measure the circumference of your thigh and choose the size which your measurements fit closest to, with the recommendation that you size down if you fall in between two options. Having run errands in them for an entire day, they didn't roll down or slip for the duration. The silicone kept them firmly where they needed to be, and it felt lovely to waltz around without an extra layer of tights or leggings underneath my dress.

You can view the whole Bandelettes range here, and even with the international shipping, they had arrived in less than a week. I cannot recommend them enough, and will definitely be coming back to purchase more. They are a wardrobe essential to survive the summer, and you'll be able to happily kiss your tights good-bye until the Autumn.

Until next time,

Spring Fling - A Sunshine Ready Dress from Collectif

London is pretty cold and blustery at the moment - lots of rain, wind and grey skies, with the odd flash of blue in between. I actually love the rain, but sometimes you need a burst of colour to lift you up so I've found myself currently gravitating towards spring colour palettes and floral prints.

Collectif are probably my favourite vintage repro brand, with a huge range of styles and fabrics. Their sales are the stuff of legend, and I managed to snap up this lovely floral sun dress for half it's original price. I was so glad I did, as I can't find anything in this shape or fabric currently on the website and I'm utterly in love with it.

Dress: Collectif
Bolero: George
Leggings: M&S
Lilac Flower: Pearls & Swine
Pink Roller Necklace: Pip Jolley

Print aside, I adore the cut of the dress. The back has an elasticated panel which meant I could size down so the dress fit my waist rather than my chest and is a size smaller than what I would buy my usual Dolores style in.

It's the perfect sun dress, and one which will see lots of action once London gets a little warmer. In the meanwhile, I'll be using layers to get as much use out of it as possible as it's currently one of the most cheerful prints in my wardrobe!

Until next time,

Party Like It's 2015

It's Sunday night, and I am currently writing this in my penguin pyjamas. Lord Dicely has insisted that the Christmas tree remains up until the twelfth day, and despite looking forward to my auto out-of-office response deactivating tomorrow, I still feel happy and cosy in my festive cocoon.

There is a huge part of me which is clambering to get back to work, and I've already found myself doing little bits and pieces of admin over the last few days. But Christmas and New Year have been so lovely, I don't feel quite ready to pack this silly, happy feeling away. And I'm certainly not ready to let go of my favourite Christmas outfits!
Dress from Collectif, leggings and cardigan from Primark, Robin hair clip handmade from a Christmas decoration.

Swallow necklace from Baku Forest Studios.

Cardigan from Primark, flowers from Pearls & Swine and a vintage dress for Christmas Day.

Nails are Tate (red base) and Graffiti (glitter) both by Nails Inc. The perfect, festive tinsel! (Thanks Susie!)

Christmas and New Year were both lovely and laid back. Christmas was spent amongst family in the countryside, whilst New Year was an evening of boozy silliness and a stunning view of the London fireworks from Parliament Hill Fields.

I've always been fairly ambivalent about celebrating the new year in a huge way, but it felt like 2015 was a finish line to a difficult race myself and my friends were all keen to get to end of. Standing in the cold armed with rum and some of my favourite people was cathartic in a way even I didn't expect. It felt very poignant seeing 2014 off and strolling back home arm in arm with some of the people who make my life feel so lovely.

Resolutions aren't something I believe in as I feel they are too easy to forget. However I always make a handful of aims to add as a guide for the new year so that there is something to push for. This year included working on my exhibition, doing more artistic collaborations and staying on top of my 5k training. The way I see it, if I can stay both creative and healthy, that should automatically lead to a certain level of happiness. I'm also aiming to be nicer to myself, especially when it comes to my workload. I've had a few health setbacks in 2014, luckily nothing awful but things which have left me feeling tired and listless. As such, it feels like 2014 was a year of setting things up rather than moving forward, but it's important for me to remember that those things ARE set up - and 2015 is the year to take action.

Now that we're a few days in and the festive fog is starting to clear, I can see what my goals are and fully intend to hit them. It's exciting - this year feels so separated from the last already, and I feel like I'm about to embark on the final and most exciting chapter of a book. Hopefully one which has a happy ending, and will be the first of a very long series. I'm ready for you, 2015! Happy new year!

Until next time,

Purple Rain - #psootd with H&M, Primark & ASOS Curve

The second I saw this H&M hat, it was love at first sight. However with it being the tail end of Summer, it seemed an utterly frivolous purchase so remained in the shop, despite my heart pangs. On my journey home, despite sweltering in the late Summer's surprise heatwave I found myself regretting the decision and vowed to return the next day to be reunited with my new purple dreamboat.

Sadly the road to true love was paved with great difficulties, and despite running around all three H&M stores at the corners of Oxford Circus and Regent Street, it seemed like everyone had fallen for the hat's wide brim charm. I went home with a heavy sigh, penning missed connection notes I could send on to Metro in my head.

Like so many modern love stories, it was the internet which finally brought us together. Something just clicked - along with my debit card - and thanks to the H&M website, the hat was soon winging it's way into my arms. Now I just need the Autumn chill to stay put long enough that I can take my hat out for a romantic hot chocolate, possibly even with my boyfriend. Then this sartorial love story can very much have it's happy ever after. Until I fall in love with a boater hat next Spring...

Hat: Wool Hat from H&M
Cardigan: Primark
Dress: Primark
Boots: Daxon
Belt: ASOS Curve
Tights: ASOS Curve
Necklace: Blowing Bubbles from Sugar And Vice
Bracelets: Vintage
Moonstone Ring: Vintage

Although I wish the dress was a little longer, I absolutely love this outfit. Even though it feels like I'm wearing too many different burgundy variants, it somehow pulled together with a little Autumnal cheek. I'm currently obsessed with this shade (it happens every Autumn) so am now on the look out for a bright nail polish in a similar colour.

Until next time,

We're Gonna Party Like It's Your Birthday - F&F True Disco Ball Plus Size Dress

When I first set eyes on this sparkle laden dress from F&F True, it was love at first sight. The shape, the fabric and the shimmer produced cartoon like heart eyes and I could barely wait to squeeze myself into it!

As a lovely surprise from the F&F team, the dress arrived just before my birthday and knew in a heart beat that it was the perfect dress to wear out for a day of fun. Even though the weather in London yesterday was nothing but rain, I brought a little shimmer to the streets whilst doing my best happy disco ball impression!

F&F True Disco Ball Plus Size Dress (£28)
Tights: Marks and Spencer
Flowers: Pearls & Swine
Necklace: Tatty Devine
Shoes: Thrifted

The dress is an absolute dream to wear. It's cut with a scoop neck and a v-neck back whilst the elasticated waistband creates a lovely silhouette. Available up to a UK size 28, it's designed to sit about the knee and is lined ensuring no static cling.

F&F True Animal Print Faux Fur Plus Size Coat (£39)
To complete the party look, I teamed it with their fantastic animal print faux fur coat which is the softest, warmest faux fur I've ever come across. If I could, I think I'd pretty much sleep in it as it's like being wrapped up in a snugly, giant blanket. Even at the incredibly low price point, the coat is fully lined and cut in a classic shape with concealed press stud fastenings and pockets to stuff cold hands into.

This is the perfect pairing for all the impending Christmas and New Year festivities, and with some cute shoes and a flick of red lipstick, you're good to go!

Until next time,

Fat Bottomed Girls They'll Be Riding Today - Cycling, Being Happy And Stopping The Apologies

Yesterday I did something which even a month ago I wouldn't have thought possible. I cycled 20k - almost 12 and a half miles or a half a marathon depending which way you want to look at it. It was completed on my exercise bike in one go at a fairly vigorous pace and felt like a massive war cry to the latest range of box ticking health professionals I've had to endure looking down their nose at me.

I started running back in January after signing up to do a 5K with one of my friends. It was something which I knew wouldn't come easily to me, but felt that starting slowly and building up my endurance would be the best way forward. I'm not a natural athlete but I am fairly fit with low cholesterol and good blood pressure and have had a decent vegetarian diet since I was 12. However I've spent more than half my life being blighted with what I now know to be PCOS and glucose intolerance which has allowed my weight to slowly creep up over the years to where I'm now struggling to keep myself between a UK size 18 - 22.

Jogging leggings and trainers from F&F. Full details here.
Over the last few years, I've learnt to accept and actually quite like my body. My diet isn't perfect - I enjoy the odd slice of pizza and cake, but like most people, for the most part keep everything in moderation. However I spent most of my adult life making apologies for how my size makes other people feel and felt guilty for making strangers feel uncomfortable. I felt self conscious eating in public. I felt judged when shopping in a supermarket. I even felt worried if the coffee shop queue was taking too long as it meant being stood next to the cake counter. I'd worry about the horror which my coffee shop companions were feeling as I imagined them imagining me contemplating which tasty calorie laden treat to gorge myself upon.

Never did I think I'd find myself in a situation where I was running in public with my k-cup boobs and wobbly bits flapping away in spandex, but felt I owed it to myself to the be the healthiest and best that I could be, no matter what size my clothing label said. So I did. I put the effort in. I ran in rain, hail and blistering heat. I ran over grass, I ran over hills, I sometimes ran to the point where I was moments away from throwing up (although I wouldn't recommend that last one).

A few months in, I was continuing to push on but was surprised to find myself still struggling with shorter distances when in theory, the 5k training I was following was complete. It didn't make sense until I had some blood tests confirm dangerously low levels of iron and vitamins b and d. My GP couldn't understand how I was still standing let along keeping up with the exercise, but sheer determination was pushing me on. Sometimes that isn't enough though, and I knew I needed to reign things in, even if just for a little while.

During this running break, I met with a PCOS specialist who I'd been seeing for the best part of a year. She was someone who had very little interest in me as a patient because she clearly didn't believe a word of what I was saying and took great pleasure in exclaiming that I hadn't lost any weight in the past year - "not even a single kilo gram!" She then proceeded to tell me that my only hope was weight loss surgery. Yep. The only thing for an active and healthy person to do is take on an expensive, dangerous and debilitating surgery so they can in their eyes "look normal". I was horrified and angry at this treatment and immediately argued that this wasn't acceptable.

I'm lucky that I have a GP who is on my side because I can see how people could easily get bullied into going down routes they don't wish to. I asked her what benefit weight loss surgery would be for someone who doesn't over eat and her response was "it's your last resort." I was too furious to argue, but would love to have questioned her over what it was my last resort from. My low cholesterol? My healthy heart rate? Or is it that my chubby arms and tummy are so revolting to her that I'm best swept away to be put under the knife, stat?

Sequin Dress from Yours Clothing. Full details here.
Coming away from the appointment, I was struck by the realisation that I've finally accepted who I am. Even a few years ago, I probably would have caved in and agreed that surgery was something I should consider whereas now, I don't feel the need to conform to someone elses idea of what normal and healthy is.

Since I've been struggling to run, I instead purchased a second hand exercise bike and in three weeks have gone from a puffed out 5k to a sweat drenched 20k and I feel proud. Slaving away to exercise is no longer about getting down to a goal weight or dream size. It's about continuing to be healthy and happy and wearing whatever the hell I want, vbl and all.

Of course I have days where I feel frumpy, but then show me a person who doesn't have an off-day. I'm hoping to have my iron and vitamin levels sorted soon and would love to be running again by the Autumn. But that's because I miss being on Hampstead Heath more than anything to do with a training program.

My vbl outside doesn't mean that I'm falling apart inside and if strangers want to make assumptions, that's their problem. If you're going to sit across from me on a bus and judge me, chances are you're probably not the sort of person I want to hang out with anyway.

Medical professionals are important, but they are not always right. I'm lucky that my GP is great, but I've learned to not be afraid of pushing for alternative solutions, and certainly it's good to ask as many questions as you can. But above all, don't let yourself be body shamed or bullied. You wouldn't accept it anywhere else in your life, and your health - both mental and physical - are of the utmost important.

I am fat, healthy and happy. Am I perfect? Of course not. But I've learned to have fun as me rather than punishing myself in an attempt to be someone else.

Until next time,

Diana xx

Finding the perfect pair of tights which don't slowly shuffle downwards is a never ending quest, but UK Tights have made the task a whole lot easier!

With more than 26,000 designs in their hosiery arsenal, they have waged war on ill fitting sag with a plus size section filled to the brim with fun, patterned and classic designs.

Pamela Mann 28 Heart Seam Tights in white.

Pamela Mann 28 Heart Seam Tights in black.
One of my favourite designs came from Pamela Mann. These heart seam tights are a wonderfully fun take on a traditional style and are available in size bands ranging from a UK 8 to a UK 32. The white option in particular is perfect for a bridal look but both colour ways have so much usage potential and are super cute!

Le Bourget Trio Fin Everyday Tights 3PP in gazelle.

It's not just patterned tights on UK Tights though - they also have a great range of everyday offerings such as the Le Bourget Trio Fin Everyday Tights which come in a pack of three.

Golden Lady Curvy 20 Denier Tights in black.
Another example of the perfect everyday selection is the Golden Lady Curvy 20 Denier Tights. Durable, stretchy and designed for a fuller figure, these tights have been specifically made to be the perfect everyday option.

The final pair which I completely fell in love with was the Cervin Seduction Couture Bicolore Seamed Tights. They completely spoke to my vintage sensibilities with their red seam and cuban heel. It's impossible to wear these and not feel like an utter femme fatal and the simple contrast of black with a red seam ensures they go with every little black dress you own.

You can view the whole range of plus size tights and more by visiting the UK Tights website here.
